Why is it usually necessary to fire a glaze before we can accurately know what quality it will have?

Unit 5 Topic 2
The Unity Formula

Firing a glaze is necessary because many other factors apart from the unity formula determine the final fired quality of the glaze.

The unity formula is only part of a complex set of factors which influence the quality of the fired glass.

Apart from the unity formula, a glaze quality may be influenced by:

  • the f iring temperature,
  • the thickness and method of application,
  • the underlying clay body,
  • the raw materials used,
  • the firing atmosphere in the kiln and
  • the firing schedule

All of these have a very important baring on the final look and feel of the glaze.
