Will glazes with the same unity formula produce exactly the same results when fired?

Unit 4 Topic 9
The Unity Formula

Not necessarily. There are many factors other than the oxide content expressed in the unity formula which effect the quality of a fired glaze.

  • Unity formulae do not usually include oxides present in raw materials in very small quantities (trace element).

  • The way in which raw materials melt can be effected by their particle size.

  • The mixing and sieving of the glaze and the manner and thickness of application will influence the fired result.

  • The colour and chemistry of the clay body are also important factors as is

  • The atmosphere maintained in the kiln during firing and

  • The speed of firing up and cooling of the kiln.
