How can there be fractions of molecules as shown in a unity formula?

Unit 4 Topic 7
The Unity Formula

The unity formula is a theoretical concept which only describes proportional relationships between the oxides in the glaze rather than actual numbers of molecues.

The unity formula expresses ratios between numbers of molecules.

The actual number of molecules involved in a glaze are millions of millions. These vast numbers are conveniently scaled down in the unity formula which thereby invariably includes some theoretical fractions of molecules.
