What makes unity formulae so useful when there are so many other factors which effect the fired result?

Unit 4 Topic 10
The Unity Formula

The unity formula is an invaluable research tool allowing the oxide content of a glaze or clay body to be easily controlled.

The unity formula provides a structural picture of a recipe which reveals a great deal (but not everything) about the possible quality of the fired glaze.

Sooner or later all those who fire clay objects will have to make adjustments to existing glazes to maintain or change quality or experiment with new materials when old ones become unavailable or have changed.
