Who was Seger?

Unit 4 Topic 2
The Unity Formula

Hermann A. Seger (1839-94).
The German born ceramist who invented unity formulation and pyrometric cones.

Seger was a chemist who concentrated on clay and heat treatment.

He is known for:

  • developing fundamental rules for overcoming crazing which followed his study of expansion rates and glaze fit.

  • devising a system of analysis (rational analysis) which describes clays in terms of pure kaolinite, feldspar and quartz.

  • inventing a method of describing a glaze by the proportions of the constituent molecules (oxides).

  • and for developing pyrometric cones for measuring heat-work
